Choosing the Right Color for Your New Windows and Doors
Now you’ve taken the time – and money – to invest in new windows and doors, there’s just one more thing to think about… What color windows and doors to choose?
When choosing your windows and doors, it’s likely you did your research, from identifying materials you wanted, to selecting the perfect style and shape for your needs. Choosing the color is the final element of your investment that requires careful consideration. After all, getting everything right means that you can totally transform not only the exterior of your house with new windows and doors, but also your lifestyle and the way your spaces are used.
Get the color right and it can help to reflect your own personality. In so many ways, it’s this last personal touch that can really make a statement about who you and your family really are.
What colors can mean on your doors and window frames?
When it comes to deciding on a color for your new windows and doors the options are seemingly endless...
You may just want to go with the flow and follow the latest trends. For instance, dove grays and green colors are in fashion right now and look great, especially when used against light stone. However, regardless of what is in vogue, you must remember that this is your home and you have to do what’s right for you. The latest trends may be useful as a guide, but not necessarily right for your home.
Giving your windows and doors color is all about harmony, so think about the shades that might work best with your brickwork, interiors and exterior space. You may want to keep a color motif running all the way through your home, from your living spaces, to your windows and doors and into your backyard.
You may also want to consider contrast. A lighter tone against darker brickwork might work in one instance, accentuating your windows to provide an attractive yin and yang. But, in another setting, the brickwork could overpower windows and doors that are light in color.
If you want to make a statement on your home without opting for vibrant, ‘out-there’ colors, darker tones may be the best option for you. Not only are they currently on-trend, they are a good choice for those who want their exteriors to look modern and while retaining a certain neutrality.
When it comes to lighter-colored frames – whites and grays for instance – they tend to offer a more classic and traditional aesthetic. Lighter colors also provide a ‘friendlier’ look to your home.
However, if you like bold splashes of color but don’t want your windows or doors to steal the show, and instead integrate subtly with their surroundings, why not try pastel colors? Inky blues, light pinks and muted shades of green are a hit with the Scandinavian-loving minimalist crowd, and add warmth in a cool, subtle way.
What colors are available for different materials?
When you sit down or speak to our knowledgeable experts at Guido, we will show you the options you have to choose from. The brands that we work with all specialize in different materials and all boast an array of colors in their product lines.
Marvin Windows, depending on the line, have many colors choices so that you can further customize your windows. Marvin Signature Ultimate line, offers the most color choices as well as an option to color match. The extruded aluminum exterior finish in this collection uses a commercial grade, high performance PVDF fluoropolymer paint that meets the AAMA 2605 standard. The wooden interiors of the Ultimate line offers factory-applied interior stains and paint so your windows are ready to install they day they arrive. Marvin’s multi-step process includes conditioning and either staining or painting the wood before your window is ever even assembled.
Lincoln Windows and Doors specialize in high-quality wooden frames, which come with a different set of choices. Natural finishes include fir, mahogany and pine, which all provide a classic, natural look and can be painted any color your choose after installation by a hired professional. Depending on your product choice, Lincoln also offers a large choice of custom colors in its aluminum clad range, too.
Finally, Rehme deals in steel fenestration and doors. While its products are outstanding and will instantly improve your home, the use of stainless steel means color options are fairly limited.
What standards can you expect?
When you choose your materials and colors, ask if your frames and doors comply with the AAMA paint standard.
The Fenestration & Glazing Industry Association (FGIA - previously known as the American Architectural Manufacturers Association, better known as AAMA) put together industry specifications that include testing and performance requirements for many components of the architectural manufacturing industry.
Paint is included in these specifications. When purchasing new windows or doors, always ask whether they meet AAMA specifications, specifically AAMA 2603, 2604 and 2605.
AAMA 2605 high-performance paint is the preferred choice of designers, architects and educated consumers and more or less guarantees exceptional color retention and minimal chalking. Most if not all modern designers and makers of frames and doors comply with these specifications.
